All up in smoke

December 7, 2007 at 11:37 am (annoying) (, , , , , )

Is it just me or are more and more pregnant women smoking? I don’t know if it’s just the folk who haunt the smoking rooms on our floors but there are waaaay too many for it to be coincidence.

Far be it from me to judge. . .but it just seems wrong somehow. Don’t people know smoking is really, really bad for a foetus (yes, yes, I know it’s bad for everyone but see it in context ok)?

I can’t imagine why anyone who is going through all the effort of having a child would want to damage the child before its even born. It’s not as if we’re living in the ’40s where the health hazards were largely unknown (or very well hidden by the makers).

Heaven knows I know how difficult it is to quit smoking – and one day I will try again – but if you’re pregnant it should surely be enough of a reason no matter how tough it is.

Or are women still so stupid that they blithely skip over the health literature or are they too busy looking for expensive sneakers for the tiny tots who’ll be so stunted at birth they could wear those shoes for a year?

As a smoker, Im sure this is going to sound rich but personally I think this sight is the ugliest ugliest thing in the world. It’s like watching someone torture a small helpless person. Just like that.

I am a firm believer that everyone should get to make their own choice about smoking and drinking, and it’s just not fair to make that decision for the baby.

More and more I see pregnant women drinking too Tobes…even a glass of wine now and then I think is not right. Have they never heard of foetal alcohol syndrome either? The damage is NOT reversible! You are essentially robbing someone of their quality of life forever! Not every baby born to a drinking mother-to-be gets it, but who is really willing to gamble with something as precious as their baby’s life?

A while back I was invited to a braai at a friend’s house where there were quite a few people that I didn’t know. Amongst them a very pregnant girl (about 7 months along I guess). My friend threw her out of the house for lighting a cigarette while she was pregnant. Her boyfriend had to take her home because she wouldn’t let her back in! I’m not sure if I would have gone to those extremes, but a part of me wanted to applaud…

MrsM, I totally agree. I don’t smoke around small kids and won’t even go near a child if I’d just had a cigarette. I’m fully aware of what I’m doing to my body but will not subject a child to that too.

Louisa, good for your friend. I don’t know if I’d go those extremes either but it’s great of her to take a stand. I hear you on the FAS too. What on earth goes through a woman’s head when she does that?
Although I also think people should be allowed to do whatever they want there are limits – especially when it comes to unborn babies. I’m actually so horrified when i see a pregnant woman drink, even more so than when they smoke. For that I would throw someone out.

I don’t smoke and i don’t drink but it also nice to see how people think about it.
It’s really nice blog and thank you for nice article 😀
