If it bleeds it leads…

September 14, 2007 at 9:25 am (ethics, journalism, Maddy McCann, news&media)

I don’t really know what to make of the new allegations that Maddy McCann was doped by her mother.

The weird thing is this was the theory one of my bosses had right at the beginning of the whole saga. She firmly believed Kate had given Madeleine sleeping pills so they could go out to eat.
Kate’s intent wasn’t malicious, my boss believed, but she’d given the wrong dose and it resulted in Maddy’s death.

It’s difficult, being a journalist, to figure out what’s going on. Some respected newspapers have their theories but most have unnamed sources. So who and what to believe then?

I can’t imagine how bad the McCanns must be feeling. If they are responsible for the death of their daughter they’re probably suffering enough.
And if they did, indeed, cover up her death their conscience will be eternal punishment, something I don’t think any jail could match.

From a journalistic point of view this is one of the “best” stories of the year – it has all the intrigue, drama and suspense to keep the ink flowing. But from a personal point of view, I wish it had never happened.

It’s obviously not an easy decision to make, publishing a story like this. But the public wants to know right? Right?

It’s so conflicting for me. I wonder if the journos in Portugal and France feel the same.

I think they did it..although i do believe that it was an accident..i also think that if the child died and the parents reported it, they both would have been stripped of their medical licenses..
The evidence is too damning meisie..when the whole thing happened and they discovered the child was gone, the Mccanns other children were so loopy..it was obvious that they too were given some kind of sedatives..And Katre washed the cat..after the Portugese police distinctly toldher not her..for what..nee, sy’s guilty, guilty, guilty!

Ai Kash. Are you sure though? Isn’t it just that we believe these things because of what the media is saying now?
I just can’t imagine how on friggin earth they could’ve launched such a moerse search campaign if they’re guilty. I mean, it’s not as if they had to do it…

I know skattie..but people are funny hey..I’ve seen stranger shit happen in my mere seven years in this crazy industry..when people are in a fix, you cannot predict their actions..ag i dunno, i guess we guna have to wait and see..

On the one hand i can see how it could be them. But maybe my brain doesn’t want to believe you can do that to your own kid!

something deep inside of me doesn’t want to believe they did it either. but these days…anything is possible.

It’s sad, isn’t it Mrs M, how we cling to the hope that it isn’t them?
Because the alternative is too horrible to contemplate. The people who started such a massive campaign and got the world to fall in love with their daughter – even getting a blessing from the Pope – would turn out to be fraudsters and killers. And what does that say about human compassion.

It says we’ve all still got hope.

  8. Toby Hanks said,

Ok, if you put it like that then it’s a good thing. Thanks for pointing that out, Mrs M.

I do try try to be positive..but then i do a story like the one i just finished…basically its about people who do horrible horrible things to their OWN children..i dont wanna go into details..but after writing it it definitely makes me think twice about this kind of thing..and truth be told, i really dont have much hope that the McCanns are innocent..

  10. Toby Hanks said,

Kash, I can imagine how bad you story was – how do we deal with this shit day in and day out? Have you ever gone for counseling after a bad story?

  11. The Divine Miss M said,

I don’t want to believe that they did it, really don’t want to as it means that the whole world has been taken for a massive joke and it really is sick that a mother could do that.

It does sort of explain how she magically went missing.

    Let’s hope it isn’t true!!!!!

  12. kash99 said,

Ag..ive never gone for counselling..but having a great supportive boyfriend helps. Usually i just do other kinds of stories for a while..u know the ones about cats stuck up trees, fluffy stories..just to recharge!! That helps for me..

  13. Toby Hanks said,

DMM, let’s all hope it isn’t true. It’s all we can do.
Kash, sometimes counseling can help. But having a supportive boyfriend is one of the most important requirements of this job!
