Time out

September 3, 2007 at 8:55 am (books, films, holiday, Manto)

I know it’s been pretty quiet here but I’ve been off and steering clear of any technology and other such stuff that would zap my brain while I was resting.
Ok, I couldn’t resist the newspaper but I wouldn’t survive without at least some kind of distraction.
I did do a few really nice things and made a few observations:

Borat the movie is the worst, worst, absolute worst thing I have EVER seen (and I’ve seen a lot of crap films in my life). I couldn’t watch to the end. Seriously, if you like this, please don’t tell me – I may just have to write you off forever.

The Book Thief is the best book I’ve read this year. It brought (many) a tear to my eye. Maybe I was just emotional but it seriously tugged at the heartstrings. It’s incredibly funny, terribly sad and beautifully written. If you only read one book this year, let this be it. It’s narrated by Death and is the story of a girl in Nazi Germany. The story is amazing and it’s completely different from anything you’ve ever read about Germany during the Nazi reign. Read it.

Shop assistants aren’t nice to students. Even though I haven’t been one since 2004 I often wear my varsity top when I’m just bumming around. I wandered into some stores to see if there was anything worth buying and got some serious attitude or snooty-sales-ladies-in-Pretty-Woman looks. Sies, I’m more than able to buy your shitty clothes but will not pull a post-Richard Gere’s cash triumph cos your clothes were kak anyway.

Fried egg and ham on toast is delicious. So is strawberries, ice cream and chocolate sauce. And mom’s food is always tops. *Nips into kitchen for more of aforementioned strawberries and chocolate sauce*

Smoking is annoying. I’m going to stop soon.

Hair is not happy with rain. I went seriously afrolicious on Thursday. But I was more Diana Kroes than Diana Ross. *Sigh*

Colleagues can be like family. They’ll drive you nuts but when push comes to shove you stick your neck out (ok, only for some). And when they leave, you cry buckets. Or you give them lots of tissues into which they blow buckets. Either way, there’s wetness and buckets.

My car is pretty damn fantastic. It can take speed and work Long Street’s corners (and its dumbass drivers) better than a Sea Point hooker on a good night.

Dark curtains are the best thing ever. So is a thick duvet. And so is the silent button on my cellphone.

As you can see I didn’t do anything eventful other than eat, sleep, read, watch films, shop and visit family. I think I should retire now. Life is good on the other side.

you gonna quit Tobes?? Why is it irritating?

Because I have to go outside to smoke. I hate stinking when I’m in civilised conversation and…and…and… Ok, it’s still lekker but the associated things (having to be the outcast) and so on is irritating.
Oh, and the lectures by former smokers annoy the crap out of me. If they stop, that’s their thing – they mustn’t tell me what to do. Do they think I’m so dumb that I don’t KNOW smoking is bad for me? Jirrie…

    Ja. I understand dear…completely:)

Ai, why did I ever try. But…I will quit when I’m ready. I’m not ready yet.
