You know…The Blacks

August 6, 2007 at 8:50 am (racism)

So there I was trying to decide between Cadbury mint or whole nut when this crazy old aunty comes up to me and goes on a complete rant about “those people”.
Um, those people?
“Yes, you know who I’m talking about. They may dress well and speak well but we all know it’s them who steals…you know…The Blacks…”
I stood there not knowing what to say, I was so stunned. She looked strange so I figured she must be a bit batty. About 70-ish, grey hair, bad teeth, moth-bitten jersey. She wasn’t normal, I concluded.
But what to do?
Do I risk screaming at a potentially crazy aunty in the middle of PnP because of her racist rant or do I just stand there and let her go on thinking I was agreeing with her?
In the end I was to shocked to say anything. She went on for about 20 minutes then walked away.
What do you do in those situations? I still wish I’d told her to shut the hell up but I don’t think it would’ve made a difference.
All I know is when I turned to the next aisle she’d cornered someone else. I quickly turned my trolley in the opposite direction…

It’s difficult to get away from situations like these. But one day, just one day I’m going to tell someone where to stick it, and it won’t be pretty.

If I had guts I’d tell her to shut up and walk away. What’s she gonna do? Poke your eyes out?
That’s muuuuuuuch easier said than done though.

I KNOW! I felt quite ashamed afterward, thinking how difficult can it be to say to an old lady that she’s racist and should shut the hell up before she gets slapped.

Ja, wat kan ek se? The old bag needed a slap upside the head!

I would definitely not be doing the slapping though! Even though I bitch and moan a lot in this blog, I’m not really into violence. The thought is good though. 😉
