Oh to be a little person

June 4, 2007 at 9:32 am (private personal space)

Little people are amazing, aren’t they? They know nothing about asking if they can enter even if you’re still in your pj’s. They don’t realise the door’s only open to let fresh air in, not people in. They don’t care if your hair’s a mess and you’re walking on your socks. There’s nothing of waiting for you to offer coffee or perhaps a nice brekkie/lunch.
And when they talk they have no agenda or malice. They ask only because they genuinely want to know. They look at your things only because it fascinates them, not because they wonder how much it costs.
I’m amazed at these little people.
My neighbour was hanging washing in the communal backyard at my block of flats when her two-year-old wandered onto my stoep. Without thinking twice she walked in and came to sit on my bed as if we were old mates. After chatting endlessly, asking questions, showing off her toy bear, Baba, she wandered out again as if it were the most normal thing in the world. I was stunned as I don’t generally “do” kids but it certainly warmed my heart.
And her visit reminded me of something I’ve forgotten recently: I wish I could still have some of the innocence of being a child.

Ha, ha. No darling. I was just fascinated – wanting to refer to them as creatures (not maliciously) should give you an idea of how much I want one though. They fascinate me in the same way people with many piercings or inked up bodies fascinate me – doesn’t mean i want one/many…
I’m mos going to be the befokte aunty; not the mommy.
