Round one: Toby Hanks vs The Insurance People

This week is not starting well. I am so severely pissed off with these insurance people I am considering cancelling on their asses and never taking it out again. Ever.
If we weren’t living in a civilised society I would seriously consider drawing blood now. Unfortunately they’re all on the other side of a telephone line and in a different province. Probably a good thing. For them.
I finally received written confirmation of my policy this morning and lo and behold an extra excess of R4000 has been tacked on. I don’t know about you but R4000 is a lot of money to me. So I’m clearly not impressed as this is not what the policy guy and I discussed.
After a flurry of calls and me pointing out this flagrant disregard for my consumer rights one agent has the audacity to tell me it’s a “technicality” that they didn’t tell me about this extra excess. As long as they discussed the basic excess, I should’ve known it would be an extra excess, he says…Brother, you’re lucky I can’t get hold of you now. Technicality basically means lie by omission and me joining a statistic of other SA suckers.
But don’t think I’m going to take this lying down. I will create such a stink they’ll need oxygen masks for months. Months, I tell you.

    Have you considered chatting with the ombudsman? They are very helpful with these things.

    Hi Louisa, I’m waiting to hear what their response is before I go that route. The guy who sold the policy said he’s going to check the tapes again and get back to me. That was this morning and I’m still waiting. If it’s not resolved I’ll go that route.

    You may or may not be aware of this, but they actually have to pay a penalty-like admin fee if anyone takes them to the ombudsman (regardless of who the ombudsman sides with). Last I heard it was a few thousand rand too. obviously this will not swing your decision in any way…just thought you’d like to know. 😉

    The ombudsman is a great suggestion.
    Also, you are most welcome to write to me- You know where!
    I can sort this out- or at least get to the bottom of it all.
    Most (if not all) insurance co’s in SA have to comply with financial services provider conduct. If they’ve ommitted something in trying to sell you a policy, they’re at fault.
    So by all means…send along!!

    Thanks Louisa. I didn’t know that. Hmmm…sounds like anyone with a grudge could take advantage though. Are you sure it’s not only if I happened to win? Mrs M, I will be sure to give you a tinkle if this guy doesn’t get back to me today. The bad thing is they can listen to the transcripts of our calls but I can’t. And they won’t send me a copy because “it’s only in audio”. The silent ‘duh’ rang through the end of the call…

    I am very sure. It’s in their best interest to keep their customers calm, happy and well informed. (And to print the contact details of the ombudsman on your actual policy and not remind you of it later when you get upset). I know someone that was very involved in the process.

    It’s wrong to use it purely for revenge purposes of course. But if you really have a problem don’t be shy to use the ombudsman, that is after all why they are there.

    You can ask them if you can listen to the tape as well. Most insurers will not give you a copy for yourself, but will allow you to come in and listen if you want to.
