Road rage

May 11, 2007 at 8:47 am (annoying, crime, frustrated, road rage)

I’ve had the occasional moment when I’ve felt I want to jump out of my car and bash someone in the face. Seriously. But, always, I’ve limited my rage to vile words and clenched fists. However, being on the receiving end of threatening behaviour has made me more cautious about who I fling insults to while on the road.
I read about the guy who was acquitted of murder after being attacked in a road rage incident. It was self-defense, they say.
It reminded me of a morning I drove to work and an asshole kept cutting me off after straddling two lines. Complete idiot. And anyone who knows Cape Town roads will know you enter traffic circles at your own risk. People just don’t know how to navigate the damn things.
Anyway, friend cut me off a few times and I let loose a torrent of words which can’t be repeated here. Eventually (after cutting across four lanes) he tried to block me off at a robot.
He parked his van slightly sideways so there was no way for me to turn and jumped out, ready to, well, I don’t know what he planned while he jumped out of his vehicle. Me, being highly fucked off at this point, rolled down my window and told him what I thought of his kak driving.
He started yelling but I gave it right back. In hindsight I realised it was probably not the best thing to do – he could’ve hurt me. Fortunately the robot changed green and I did a swivel and rode off. But when I think about it all I can think of is what else I could’ve said to him; not how I could’ve been attacked.
I understand road rage. I know how you can lose your cool and the road and I’ve been trying to be more calm. But given half the chance to bitchslap some braindead loser…
Anyway, read Batman’s account of his experience on the road. It’s hilarious.

Traffic congestion is a major cause – interestingly though is the fact that alcohol is involved in most case as it “clouds” the judgement. On the Reports of bad driving to the Arrive Alive website we find more and more cases of aggressive driving / road rage. Also view the section on road rage on the arrive alive website.

Within the next month the Synovate study on road rage will be released and we will also share this on the Road Safety & Arrive Alive Blog.

But – in the meantime – remember -Eagles do not catch flies! – so dont step down to the level of rude, arrogant and inconsiderate motorists!

Thanks Johan. I don’t drink, so I know my fury isn’t fuelled by alcohol. What gets to me is the fact that people – knowingly – break traffic rules and endanger others just so they can push forward. What I’ve also found (and have discussed this with friends too) is that men are much more aggressive towards women. Because I’m not really the shrinking violet type, I match their fury which I think is weird for them.

I hate being like that on the road, to be honest, but I can’t seem to help it. Men really are bastards on the road – and women do exactly the opposite: too cautious so they hold everyone up which pisses everyone off.

I don’t know what the solution is here but I do look forward to seeing the study on road rage. When exactly will it be out?

Yes, but men are nastier when they see it’s a woman driving. Do you have any idea how varkerig a man can be if he sees a woman driving faster than him? You would have to see it to believe it.

I’m not saying he was wrong – I can imagine he must’ve been shit scared. Shame man, didn’t know about the kids. It’s almost like being arrested for shooting a burglar in your own home.
