A Samaritan and his money are soon parted

May 8, 2007 at 8:55 am (conman, crime, money)

Warning: there’s another con-man on the loose. For those who’ve fallen prey to the “Aca Joe owner”, I feel your pain. For those who haven’t: watch out. He’s smooth and a real performer.
Although I haven’t fallen for this schmuck (I’m too much of a cold-hearted bitch I guess) a close friend has (what a good guy).
Our smooth talker buzzes any number at a block of flats or siddles up to students (at least this is what Jennifer Miller says here). The grey-haired scumbag then pretends to be locked out of his office and needs money to call a locksmith. After asking to use your phone (which, fortunately, he doesn’t steal) he will ask you for the cash. He may even ask you to go to an ATM if you don’t have any.
After lulling you into a false sense of security with his straight-up looks and approach, the sneaky bastard will promise you a voucher from Aca Joe and commend you for being such a great neighbour/citizen/friend, etc. He’ll promise to drop the voucher in your postbox but alas, that will be the last you hear from him. Don’t fall for him. The saddest thing about this is it just makes you doubt every real request for help.
It just doesn’t count to be a good Samaritan these days. For Jennifer’s full account, read here http://blogs.uct.ac.za/blog/varsity_newspaper

Ja, it’s sad. My friend even found a few things to buy with the still outstanding voucher!
