Of chocolate and pickled fish

April 5, 2007 at 6:36 am (easter eggs, family holiday, pickled fish)

The best thing about Easter for me is the easter eggs. I know, I’m shallow like that. The other nice thing is pickled fish (only snoek because I don’t do stockfish) but only when eaten with family (ie, mom, dad, sis, bro). Do not ever serve me pickled fish if I visit your house because I will respectfully decline. Pickled fish is a family dish – only to be enjoyed with loved ones while telling them how awful the onion makes them smell. And if you want to remain my friend, don’t ever serve me hot cross buns with raisins. I will hurl then leave your house in a huff. I don’t do raisins in any form, shape, size, colour.
Up until my final year of studying (in Stellenbosch) I didn’t know pickled fish was a coloured thing. My white friends had no clue what I was talking about and I couldn’t figure out why they were so dumb. Turns out it was a cultural thing. Duh.
Anyway, no matter how you and yours choose to celebrate Easter, remember to think of those less fortunate; to drive safely; and to cherish what you have cos you never know how long you’ll have it for.

By the way, did you have pickled fish and chocolate at all this weekend? Now you can mos eat meat again. Yay!! Everyone give a round of applause to Batman who managed to stay meat free (bar one or two slips) for Lent. The man has willpower.
