Not in my KPA

March 7, 2007 at 6:41 am (colleagues and friends)

I’m having an existential crisis. I don’t know what’s going on. Either I’m really tired or I’m losing my marbles (I don’t get that saying – I didn’t even play marbles as a kid).
In short: I applied for a job, managed to get it, said I’d resign, then changed my mind. All in the space of two weeks. Needless to say, I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster.

But I have learnt some things in the process and realised I work with some really cool people.

Jerry Clyde, for example, was a beacon during these dark days of indecision. Covering for me when I went to “lunch” (read interview); being the voice of reason when I thought I’d crack. Let’s just say he’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with.

Then there’s my boss, Lilly. She didn’t get mad when I told her I wanted to resign. Instead she gave me some cold champagne which chilled me so much I told her about the things that just didn’t work for me . We talked, drank champers, giggled, cried (ok, I got a bit emotional and keep in mind that I don’t ever drink alcohol!) and laughed all in one go. It was fab, as she’d say.

And if I think about the other people I work with I realise that I do have a small family at work. I see these people more than eight hours in one day. Fortunately I can actually say I do like them and they make coming to work life bearable. They are all crazy – just the way I like it.

Who else has Marvin (who’s an exact clone of Marvin from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s except he’s not a robot…I think)? Or Mr Volume – he of the loud shirts and quirky jokes? Nobody else has Jonno with the sick sense of humour zipping around on his wheels brandishing his cane at wayward kids. Nor do they have Natter – the warmest woman I know with the biggest heart and a tantalising slip of gossip at every turn. Ace is a wizard with words and has a wise, kind soul. And ZeeZee is just about the best person you could work with. Ever.

The best thing is they’re the smartest people in the world and they’re my friends. And for now, that’s all I need to know.
